It's time for Appalachia and Pound to quit playing persecuted all the time. You guys wanted your school open for ATHLETIC traditions and many refuse to send their kids to school with PV because of an ATHLETIC rivalry. It's even more unfair for stubborn attitudes keeping their kids in a school that is falling apart as opposed to a newer, better building, and a school that could possibly have a wider ACADEMIC curriculum.

The county can't afford to keep 6 schools anymore. It's not about losing your school either. The 2 on 1 or 3 on 1 plans are absurd. WHy don't they go with the original plan? 3 schools on 3 sites. The reason many Appalachia folks oppose consolidation is because they are too hung up on that athletic tradition and they hate Powell Valley. The reason Pound doesn't want to consolidate is because they hate JJ Kelly. Those are very poor reasons to oppose it. Not one of those two reasons puts the students' education first. That's sad. If you want to think about athletics, then athletics at both Pound and Appalachia have been falling apart.

Let go of the ATHLETIC tradition and the ATHLETIC rivalry and think about the ACADEMIC benefits of this. If you can give me one academic reason as to why consolidation is bad then I can respect your position. If all you're going to do is play like Appalachia and Pound are always the victim or even mention athletics then I can't respect your position.

    Re: Board of Supervisors Tonite?

I'm curious... doesn't anyone teach SPORTSMANSHIP down that way?

I rem. reading on a forum a couple of years ago about the Pennington-Jonesville MS kids and parents saying they shouldn't play each other... even thought they would be CLASSMATES in a couple of years. Wonder why Lee is so bad? Those kids were TAUGHT to hate each other. Team? Not hardly.

Let's remember one VERY important thing... IT'S ONLY A GAME, people.

Here's an idea.... Va. allows private schools and charter schools. All the parents who don't want their kids to go to school with other kids from a few miles away, shut your yappin' and actually DO something ...start your own school. Even have a football team. There's a UET league you can play in (wait, I've actually not heard anything about it in the last couple of years, so it may not exist anymore). Name it Appalachia Private School and be the APS Bulldogs... and the Pound Community School Wildcats. Or start a Montessori School... Lee Co. has one. (oh, wait... they'd never be able to spell that... and I doubt most ppl. this side of I-77 know how to pronounce it. Nevermind.)

Oh, and welcome to the SWD. Enjoy those basketball trips to Hillsville.

Absolutely the reason the kids are going to be stuck in a school setup that is absurd is people like this. What these people don't realize is that regardless of what plan was chosen, Appy and Pound don't have their school. Absolutely none. So to choose a plan that punishes your OWN children, just to be spiteful and because you can't look past "I don't wanna be no dang Viking", is pathetic at best.

If you can't understand that, then you only reinforce my point.

I couldn't care any less about where the school is. As long as it is not a huge travel issue. Oh wait, the 2 on 1 site is. Appalachia and BSG are basically 4 miles apart. How can travelling over 15 to 20 minutes on the four lane benefit the students academically? PV and Appy students shouldn't have to travel 15 to 20 miles up the four lane to go to school.

How is Appalachia High in better shape than PV? Why should we send 500 to 600 students to a school holding a maximum of an estimated what 250? You just "don't wanna be no dang Viking!!!!!!!!11111oneoneone" or you don't want to give up the ATHLETIC tradition.

You're just supporting whatever it takes to prevent Appalachia kids from going to school with Powell Valley students. That's pathetic and childish. Grow up. Get over yourself.
